An operational manual designed to support the learning of spatial and graphomotor prerequisites of children aged 5 to 8. Through operational activities on cards and preparation or muscle strengthening training, children are accompanied in the initiation and/or evolution of writing in capital letters.

The volume presents a program “from the body to the paper” proposing a series of activities – from the simplest to the most complex – focused on spatiality to encourage the stimulation of awareness, planning or mental representation along a specific path that includes:

  • Multidimensional stimulation, through global motor activities;
  • Three-dimensional stimulation, through concrete manual and manipulative activities;
  • Two-dimensional stimulation, through paper and pencil.

Each section of the volume presents a narrative frame – a chapter of the story Timmy the Bunny in the world of signs – which accompanies children along a learning journey. Timmy’s adventures tell of hardships, insecurities and limiting beliefs, states of mind that often characterize the little ones, which is why boys and girls can easily identify with the various characters and grasp positive and empowering messages from the story.

All Erickson pre-writing volumes

Writing is a complex skill that brings together fine motor control, visual coordination, attention, and spatial awareness. Pre-writing includes all the playful and structured activities that prepare children for handwriting, helping them develop essential abilities such as line precision, directionality, and shape reproduction. Starting early means supporting balanced development and preventing later difficulties — turning the learning of writing into an enjoyable and rewarding experience. Erickson’s pre-writing resources, based on scientific research and a playful approach, offer gradual, engaging pathways to strengthen graphomotor and perceptual skills. With a variety of inclusive materials – worksheets, guided paths, illustrations, and multisensory activities – these volumes are perfect for both classroom use and individual practice, combining learning with fun every step of the way.

The workshop has a very wide field of application:
  • In kindergarten, it is useful for structuring activities that train pre-graphical and graphomotor skills;
  • In primary school, it is a tool for teaching/learning writing in its executive graphomotor component;

TEACHING HANDWRITING

Teaching handwriting well from the start is better than having to re-teach it later — poor handwriting often stems from poor teaching. This book presents a method resulting from a ten-year experience in pre-school and primary school teaching. The authors show how students can move from pre-writing to writing in capitals and italics in a continuous and spontaneous transition. Children learn to master writing in a natural, effortless and playful way by internalizing movement, posture and handgrip. Beside the many suggestions and examples on how to apply the method to the different school grades, the authors devote much attention to dysgraphia—what it is, how to recognize it and how to prevent it. TEACHING WRITING – PRACTICE

This book offers more than 150 worksheets with practical tips and pencil and paper materials, so that children can acquire mastery in writing spontaneously through play. It can be used by nursery school teachers (for acquiring the essential prerequisites to ease and spontaneity in writing), by primary school teachers (for teaching the correct methodology for joined-up writing), by support teachers and educators (for individualised teaching aimed at remediating any graphomotor difficulties) and by rehabilitators and clinicians (for correct retraining in writing in the event of dysgraphia). It comes with a phonological alphabet wall mural and online resources where «word cards» can be downloaded for working on sentences. Find out more!
