A journey about emotions for primary school

A journey about emotions for primary school

Six Little Pixies Between the Lines is geared towards primary school teachers and was developed to meet the need for classroom materials on the subject of emotions.

The new volume Six Little Pixies Between the Lines was inspired by Six Little Pixies in my Heart, a story with likeable characters which has appealed to thousands of readers of all ages, taking them to fantastic imaginary places while helping them understand the importance of recognizing and accepting one’s own emotions.

Six Little Pixies Between the Lines is a stand-alone text with respect to the narrative book from which the readings were taken. The sequence of 12 extracts, which are the beginning of each unit of study, allow students to grasp the plot, get to know the main characters, and understand the key events of the story.

At the end of each reading there are activities which explore a specific emotion through a series of elaborations in different forms: psychological understanding of the situation, intrapersonal reflection, creative writing, retelling, creative retelling, and sharing.

The two volumes can be used individually, or they can be used together to create a unitary project which takes you not only on a journey of reading, but also on a journey of emotional education.

Here is the structure of the learning units

READING
Each unit begins with an extract from the book Six Little Pixies in my Heart.

READING AND UNDERSTANDING

The stimulus-questions that follow the reading are intended to open a pathway for reflection and discussion about the psychological situation experienced by the protagonists, and told through the narrated events.

IF IT WERE ME…

Using the questions posed on the “If it were me…” page, students are asked to put themselves in a specific character’s place. Each learning unit focuses on a different character.

IT HAPPENED TO ME TOO

The page “It happened to me too” proposes a guided journey involving the representation and description of a real-life or imagined situation which is emotionally similar to the one presented in the story.

I WRITE

The page “I write” is composed of two parts. The first part introduces the psychological situation in question, prevalently through the use of icons (comics). The second part, instead, asks the student to answer guided questions aimed at producing a written text.

EMOTIONS IN PLAY

Through this type of activity, the target psychological situation is elaborated upon by using play. Various games and puzzles propose the use of an “emotion-o-meter” to reflect upon the intensity of the emotion.

EMOTIONS IN ART

By identifying art as one of the most privileged forms of emotional expression, these pages
offer artistic starting points for ideas about different genres of painting, drawing, music, photography, theatre, etc. which refer to a specific emotional state.

THE WORD GOES TO YOU

«The word goes to you» is a space for sharing ideas. The students, in groups of 4 or 5, write down their own opinions on the pages of the other members of the group.
