In order to encourage the acquisition of comprehension and written expression skills — essential for scholastic progress — the book proposes activities based on oral skills, both at a receptive and expressive level, following two programmes (A and B, each one divided into 20 sessions), targeting respectively children in primary years one and two or even older, with struggling pupils.

Each session starts with listening to a fairy tale, a story or informative text, followed in an alternating fashion and according to a determined progression, by activities dealing with:
• comprehension;
• spoken and written narration;
• lexical enrichment;
• metacognitive reflection.

The book comes with a rich array of photocopiable material:
• in programme A, for each session worksheets for the children and the sequence cards of the reading are provided and, in a  special section, cards with people and places, totalling over 120 cards;
• in programme B, in addition to the worksheets for the children for each session, 17 cards related to some of the fairy tales told and 7 cards with the basic structural elements of the story are provided.
