Flow cards

Activities to initiate attention, promote a state of flow, and strengthen cognitive abilities, executive functions, working memory and emotional self-regulation through the Benso Method

Eva Benso

Flow Cards are a tool developed as part of the Benso Method®, designed to activate attention and strengthen executive functions, creating the ideal conditions for tackling demanding tasks and supporting learning. Through quick, progressive and fully adaptable activities involving numbers, colours, symbols, animals, dice and syllables, they train concentration, working memory, cognitive flexibility, error monitoring and the ability to manage distractions. They can be used either as a brief warm-up to “switch on” the brain and facilitate entry into a state of flow, or as part of a more structured and extended cognitive training programme.

Flow Cards can be used with children, teenagers, adults and older people, provided that the activities, pace and level of difficulty are adapted to the individual’s abilities. Younger children should be guided by an adult or a trained professional.

HOW TO PLAY

The facilitator selects around 20–30 cards and presents them one at a time, maintaining a brisk pace that is appropriate for the individual. Depending on the activity, the player may be asked to name numbers, colours, symbols, animals or quantities, read syllables, perform a gesture, remain silent or switch rules whenever a special card appears. The level of difficulty increases gradually by combining different tasks, training attention, working memory, cognitive flexibility and inhibitory control.

If a mistake is made, the activity does not stop. Instead, the facilitator briefly slows the pace to help the player regain their rhythm before continuing. Activities typically last 3–5 minutes as an attentional warm-up or 15–20 minutes for more structured cognitive training.
