Another kind of school is possible: the challenge of inclusion at the 10th Erickson International Congress «The quality of school and social inclusion»

The most eagerly awaited event on the calendar regarding education, integration and disability and the promotion of inclusive “Good Schools” will be held in Rimini on the 13th, 14th and 15th of November. The programme for the tenth edition of the International Congress «The quality of school and social inclusion», promoted by Centro Studi Erickson, is now ready. Over the course of three plenary sessions and more than 80 workshops, 200 speakers will take to the microphone. The highly acclaimed sociologist Zygmunt Bauman and the French philosopher Edgar Morin stand out among the guests.

Trento, 17th September 2015 – It all started in 1997, when a thousand or so teachers, educators and pedagogists met up in Riva del Garda to discuss and present concrete proposals which could lead to true school integration.

Today the biennial congress dedicated to the Quality of school and social integration, now in its tenth year, has become a reference point for promoting inclusive “Good Schools”, founded on the promotion of the differences and skills of every single pupil: schools where differences are not only accepted, but are also stimulated, encouraged and taken advantage of in everyday activities, so that classes work together and grow as individuals and as a groups.

In particular, the tenth edition of the congress will offer the chance to highlight the path integration has taken over the years and to reflect on the main themes of school and social integration, disability, learning difficulties and innovative teaching technologies and methodologies, with the objective of sharing and outlining new programmes and practical suggestions.

Plenary sessions Dario Ianes, one of the greatest experts in Special Pedagogy, will open the sessions, and, starting from the “ten great ideas” which were discussed in the previous editions of the congress, will kick-off the debate on the main themes – from Special Educational Needs to new technologies for teaching – which will light up the way towards inclusive “Good Schools”. A debate in which not only internationally acclaimed speakers but also many experts in the field will take part.

Among the international guests, the philosopher and sociologist Edgar Morin and the inventor of the concept of liquid modernity Zygmunt Bauman, who will both tackle an extremely topical issue, as is immigration, reflecting on how to explain Islamism in class and on how education has changed in times of migration.

“The 1 hour lesson” and the concept of education will be tackled by the psychoanalyst and writer Massimo Recalcati and by the theologist Vito Mancuso. Antonio Calvani, expert in didactics and educational technology will inquire as to who the good teachers really are. Lastly, the pedagogist Francesco Zambotti will illustrate the potentials of digital teaching from an inclusive perspective whilst the psychologist Fabio Celi will explain the advantages of the cognitive behavioural approach in classroom management. Alongside them we will meet three “impossible speakers”, Maria Montessori, Burrhus Skinner and Lev Vygotskij, whose pedagogical theories will come to life through the majestic performance of several Actors.

For the analysis of learning processes we will hear Daniela Lucangeli, one of the greatest experts in numerical intelligence, who will investigate in-depth the role of emotions, and the neuroscientist Giorgio Vallortigara, who will explain how to improve “the sense of number” that every child is born with.

Full scope will be given to emotional and relational aspects characterising childhood and adolescence, with speeches from the psychotherapist Alberto Pellai, who will tackle the topic of sexual miseducation in digital natives, the pedagogist Daniele Novara, who will explain the advantages of “arguing with technique” and the psychiatrist Gustavo Pietropolli Charmet, who will talk about the “struggle” of growing up.

Lastly, with the aim of identifying effective strategies for integration and inclusion for disabilities and special educational needs, the following topics will be tackled in-depth – behavioural disorders (with Stefano Vicari, a neuropsychiatrist), Oppositional Defiant Disorder (with Gianluca Daffi) Autism Spectrum Disorders (with Paola Venuti, professor in Dynamic Psychology and Clinical Psychopathology), dyslexia (with Giacomo Cutrera, vice-president of the Italian Dyslexia Association), and Special Educational Needs (with Cesare Cornoldi, professor in Learning Psychology).
