The body IS the teacher, born from the collaboration between Professor Daniela Lucangeli and the communication expert director Luca Vullo, is a unique manual to learn about the importance of non-verbal communication at school. Examples and suggestions, together with the suggestion tables by Francesco Chiacchio, allow you to learn the language of the body and gestures, posture and presence, listening and empathy. Starting from real situations that a teacher can often encounter, such as keeping pupils’ attention, how to organize interesting and compelling lessons, how to educate about emotional intelligence to manage conflicts and improve the classroom atmosphere, this volume analyzes the problems and proposes solutions and exercises to learn how to best use gestures and expressions, transforming them into real communication tools to get in touch with students.

By reading this book, you will learn to master facial expressions, gestures, tone and timbre of the voice, transforming the non-verbal and paraverbal code into your best communication resource, significantly improving your relationship with students and colleagues and obtaining more easily listening and
recognition.

A more informative and operational part alternates with insights from scientific research:

  • joint attention
  • emotions and facial expressions
  • the mystery of communication
  • paraverbal communication
  • the effects of digital devices
  • personal and social skills
  • the cognitive system

THE BODY IS THE TEACHER

Looking, listening, gestures, contact: non-verbal communication at school

From the collaboration between Daniela Lucangeli, a psychologist and expert in learning psychology followed the most by Italian teachers, and director Luca Vullo, performer and communications expert, a unique manual has been born: a guide that explains the importance of non-verbal communication in school in detail, with scientific insights and practical suggestions. Teachers of all levels will be able to learn how to master facial expressions, proxemics, gestures and tone and timbre of the voice, transforming the non-verbal and paraverbal codes into their best communicative resource. In this way they will be able to significantly improve their relationship with pupils and colleagues and obtain listening pupils and recognition more easily.

STRUCTURE AND CONTENTS

The book is divided into 8 chapters, each one dedicated to one of the five senses or to a specific communication aspect:

  1. Regaining eye contact and the ability to observe
  2. Re-educating ourselves to listen
  3. The voice is our wonderful musical instrument
  4. The magical power of the hands
  5. Gestural vs. Digital: let’s connect without wifi
  6. Nurturing emotional intelligence to grow together
  7. The classroom is your theatre: are you ready to go on stage?
  8. Pupils are not aliens who have come to Earth to destroy you!

At the end of each chapter, the “Problems” and “Solutions” sections (indicated by an orange drawing symbolising Luca Vullo) summarise the main communication topics and issues treated in the chapter. Practical exercises to carry out with the whole class follow each of the mentioned sections.

The illustrations immediately synthesise real situations

Subsequently, problems are analysed and solutions and exercises to improve gestures and expressions are proposed.
