Tinkering<\/em>, Coding<\/em>, Making <\/em>is the series born from the workshop\/project <\/strong>ICS – Immaginare Crescere Sviluppare<\/em><\/strong> <\/strong>(Imagine Grow Develop<\/em>) <\/strong>from the Fondazione Mondo Digitale<\/a><\/strong> (Digital World Foundation). The project consists of gathering a series of \u201crecipes\u201d with many ingredients, preparation times and step to follow, for teachers who want to use innovative didactics<\/strong>, starting from tools and resources that they already have or are easy to find.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

TINKERING, CODING AND MAKING: WHAT ARE THEY?<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Tinkering, coding <\/em>and making <\/em>are three engaging teaching practices, applicable at school and at home<\/strong>, to guide children in carrying out activities that combine technology, science and art. These practices are essential to developing socio-cognitive processes, training the imagination, empowering <\/strong>and implementing forms of creativity <\/strong>that are the basis of the fundamental savoir-faire of the 21st century.<\/p>\n

Tinkering<\/em><\/strong>, or fiddling around<\/em><\/strong>, is a moment where creativity and experimentation are given free rein<\/strong>, putting hands-on activities at the centre. The tinkering<\/em> activities are based on common, recycled and recovered materials<\/strong>, and develop skills such as: analyzing, maintaining concentration, knowing how to work independently, recognizing one’s own limits and those of the situations one is confronted with, evaluating different hypotheses, making devices.<\/p>\n

Coding<\/em><\/strong>, or programming<\/em><\/strong> (even only when using a sketchbook), is an activity that allows the development of computational thinking<\/strong>, which consists of recognizing patterns, breaking down complex problems into simple problems, developing algorithms, finding solutions and generalizing them. Through coding<\/em>, we learn the multiple functions of the computer and become familiar with the interaction between man and machine<\/strong>, protagonist of the near future.<\/p>\n

Making<\/em><\/strong>, or giving life to a common project<\/em><\/strong> by creating it<\/strong>, favours collaboration, communication, and the development of critical thinking skills. By bringing together information, knowledge and ideas, the makers<\/em> produce original and innovative products (objects, tools, materials) to meet different needs.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

CONTENTS<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

In each volume of the series, 8 activities <\/strong>are suggested, divided equally into two groups: plugged<\/em><\/strong>, or rather connected to technology or devices<\/em>, and unplugged<\/em><\/strong>, or disconnected from any type of technology. For each activity, photographs<\/strong> and all necessary instructions<\/strong> are provided: <\/strong><\/p>\n

  • the teacher\u2019s role<\/strong>;<\/strong><\/li>\n

    The volumes in the series Tinkering, Coding, Making<\/em> are aimed at enterprising teachers and parents <\/strong>who want to introduce children to tinkering<\/em>, coding<\/em> and making<\/em> in a fun and creative way.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
