Children’s behaviour in the classroom environment depends on many factors<\/strong>: from their temperament, to their motivation, to their ability to control their emotions, to how they are raised at home, to how the teacher speaks to them, to the behaviour of the other children in class…<\/p>\n

Based on the principles of the token economy<\/em>, The Rewards Briefcase<\/strong> helps the teachers better structure his\/her intervention in the classroom, thanks to the series of materials it contains.<\/p>\n

What is the \u201cToken economy\u201d<\/p>\n

The “token economy<\/em>” can be of great help in encouraging and assisting a child to improve his or her behaviour in class.
\n\t The token economy<\/em> is essentially based on two concepts.  Concept<\/strong> number one<\/strong> refers to everything that a teacher can do prior to the student’s behaviour: establish and communicate clear, personalized and reasonable objectives to the child<\/strong>.  Concept <\/strong>number two<\/strong> refers to everything that a teacher can do after the student’s behaviour: reinforce it (with lots of conviction!) when it is correct<\/strong> and punish it (very cautiously!) when it is not. <\/strong><\/p>\n

The token <\/strong>is a symbolic reinforcement<\/strong> which signals to the children that they have reached their mini-goal.  If the child behaves well, he\/she earns a token.  If the child misbehaves, he\/she loses it. <\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Materials in the rewards briefcase<\/p>\n

The rewards briefcase can help teachers better structure their interventions thanks to a series of materials that it contains.  Here is what is inside:<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n

The board <\/p>\n

The board, to be hung in class, is used to apply the token <\/em>economy program.  On the board, the children’s names and the behaviour objectives<\/strong> to be reached are written.  Beside these, the token<\/strong> stickers are placed (from 1 to 10), as the children gradually earn them through correct behaviour.  There is also a place on the chart for “social reinforcer<\/strong>” stickers (thumbs up, victory symbol, trophy, fireworks) and warning stickers<\/strong> in case negative behaviour occurs (yellow card and red card). Moreover, each child can add a feeling sticker<\/strong> for the day, as a self-evaluation tool (sad face, happy, angry…). <\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n

Sticker book <\/p>\n

Contains more than 600 stickers to place on the board (stickers with behaviour objectives, tokens, “social reinforcer” stickers, warning stickers, and feeling stickers).  <\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n

Passport and marker-stamper<\/p>\n

The rules <\/p>\n

Before starting, it is important to share the “rules of the game” with the children.  This is that the rules sheet is for.  It explains the procedure (when to put a stamp in the passport, how to earn tokens, how tokens can be lost, what happens when a rule is broken…)<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n

The contract <\/p>\n

It formalizes the commitment that the students make together with the teacher and classmates to respect the behaviour rules that have been shared.  This should be hung in class alongside the board and the rules.  <\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n

Some helpful hints before starting <\/p>\n

    \n
  • It is expected that the token economy<\/em> rewards briefcase program<\/strong> be used with all the children in the class<\/strong>;<\/li>\n
  • The objectives<\/strong> that are established for each child must be clear, reasonable, and personalized<\/strong>, taking into account the characteristics of each child;<\/li>\n
  • The tokens should not be used in a competitive fashion among the children.  Victory<\/strong> must be cooperative<\/strong>: no one can win alone.  For the class to win, it is necessary for everyone to reach their goal;<\/li>\n
  • A teacher and a class may need a structured program for part of a year, more often for an entire school year and sometimes even for several years. But the ultimate goal is that students learn to stand on their own two feet;<\/li>\n
  • The teacher as well as the students should use it creatively<\/strong>, putting in a lot of themselves and considering their daily experiences. <\/li>\n<\/ul><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n
