Homework is intended to enable the pupil to revise and elaborate on what the teacher has presented in class, involving time and space for personal reflection, which is useful for strengthening skills already learnt or in the process of being consolidated. Children with ADHD, after an intense cognitive activity during the morning, run the risk of feeling oppressed by having to undertake further work at home in the afternoon.
In these cases homework time may generate deep feelings of inadequacy in children and their parents, with moments of anxiety and conflict so much so as to compromise the family’s balance.
This book presents an assistance programme for children aged 7 to 14 for completing school homework alongside a homework tutor, a role, which, in many circumstances can be filled by an adult family member. The aim is to help pupils develop executive competences, which will in turn allow them to become progressively more autonomous in their studies. It provides original and motivating tips and tools — including, attached with the book, coloured material to cut out — in order to:
• kit out their physical work space, functionally organising necessary material;
• evaluate and manage time correctly, sticking to hand-in deadlines too;
• evaluate and manage own resources correctly, taking advantage of appropriate breaks;
• divide complex homework up into several parts and complete each part correctly;
• check for mistakes and correct them.
