ABSTRACT

That kid drives me insane! He delves into my backpack and drawers and he is always buzzing around demanding things: “will you read me a story? What are you eating? Give me some! Let’s play hide and seek! Give me the remote, I want to watch the cartoons…! Get up from the armchair! Let me see that! Mommy, Martina is hitting me!”
But when granny comes, he changes: he is all well behaved and sits up straight. So granny falls for it: “what a nice boy my nephew is! So well behaved”, she says, “and you Martina, why are you always so mad at him?!”
“It’s sooo annoying!”

Emotions, in particular negative ones, are very difficult to single out and control, especially for children. The purpose of this diary and workbook is to help children discover the meaning of fear, anger and disgust by telling the story of Martina, aged 9, and her brother Mattia, 7 years old. With the help of this book, negative emotions are made easy through comparisons to atmospheric events—for example, anger is like a storm, joy is like a clear sky, fear is like a rain shower, terror is like ice, etc..
But once you have learned to recognize negative emotions, you must learn how to face them. So Martina’s diary suggests a set of steps that will help kids deal positively with any situation.
The book includes an audio CD with a collection of songs on emotions.
