THE CD-ROM

This software programme aims to teach and consolidate the processes which are at the base of dealing with numbers and performing the four operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication and division with one or more digits).

The main characteristic and strength of the programme is its open structure. In addition to a series of operations which are already set and can be used straightaway, the software offers the teacher an open framework, which can be adapted to the differing needs of each class. Differently from programmes of the «click on the right answer» variety, this programme provides a coherent environment where the competences and abilities of primary school students can be practised.

So it is not a workbook but a work environment to be explored, which teachers can adapt to suit their requirements, planning teaching activities and considering the best use of the software for their aims and their pupils.
THE BOOK

The book opens with a general introduction on the potential that new technologies offer in teaching, with special reference to the use of IWBs (Interactive White Boards). It then illustrates the dynamics of cooperative learning, the role of the teacher as mediator and the building of work groups. It ends with a detailed description of the work environment, providing a practical guide to using this software and photocopiable worksheets which the children can practice on; correspondence between the elements found in the digital part and the paper-based part will guide children, rendering them progressively more independent in their work.
