The mainly abstract teaching of mathematics is often a barrier, which is sometimes insuperable, for pupils with intellectual disabilities. This is because the traditional teaching approach used by teachers to tackle determined topics is often detached from any concrete references. This is particularly the case for fractions: the idea of a fraction and the relationship between a whole number and its parts are in fact often presented in various situations of daily life, yet they are almost always dealt with in an abstract way which is not suited to the cognitive level of many pupils.

Fractions and decimals in practice, in this new, updated and extended version, offers activities on the concepts of fractions and decimals centred around real-life aspects and on the most common logical operations.
The units in the book are thus based on situations familiar to children (buying something in a shop, organising a birthday party, playing with friends etc) and they present the mathematical notions in their concrete «use», demonstrating how, by using these concepts, many practical problems can be solved.
The wide selection of illustrated worksheets allow children, through simple, enjoyable exercises, to:
• Understand the notion of «whole numbers»
• Learn to make fractions and divide into equal parts
• Recognise proper, apparent and improper fractions
• Use the fraction symbol
• Understand the meaning of decimals with money and measurements.
