The volume proposes an innovative method to set up a program of philosophical reflection in kindergarten to facilitate a “different” type of discussion with children, one which triggers wonder in them and helps them discover the world in an original way. Each of the 5 areas examined illustrates a starting reflection point to propose to the children:

  • Fragments of philosophy
  • Mental experiments
  • Classic stories
  • Illustrated books
  • Other areas of discovery

The author suggests a series of questions, stories and experiences that, starting in kindergarten, allow you to have conversations “charged” with wonder and a philosophical tension that makes them different from other types of conversations.

Why do philosophy in kindergarten?
The volume offers ideas and examples for starting philosophical conversations from very different starting points: fragments of ancient philosophers, “classic” thought experiments, fables, paintings, illustrated books, experiences, proverbs … Doing philosophy with girls and boys is like inviting them to explore paths and landscapes that, in order to be crossed, require them to experiment with new gaits, to walk up ascents and descents that are steeper than usual and to find connections between what you know (or think you know) and what you still don’t know yet.  By doing this and playing by exploring the boundaries of what they are able to think, even the little ones train themselves to deal with doubt and uncertainty. The question then becomes: why not do it, since it can be done with great involvement and fun for both the children and the teacher?

THE STRUCTURE OF THE BOOK

The author suggests a series of questions, stories and experiences that, starting in kindergarten, allow you to have conversations "charged" with wonder and a philosophical tension that help children to question themselves about various situations and concepts, all guided in a simple and stimulating way.

Each question is introduced with a starting point, which is essential for identifying the focal point of the discussion and the possible connecting topics; real practical experiences are then proposed from which to draw inspiration.

Each question is introduced with a starting point

The questions allow for a class conversation to be set up

The author's advice, expansions and practical experiences help the teacher guide and regulate the debate in the most appropriate way.

Can philosophy really be done in kindergarten? With what meaning? In what way?

Yes, there are questions, stories and experiences that, as early as kindergarten, allow you to have conversations "charged" with wonder and philosophical tension that makes them different from other types of conversation. The history of philosophy teaches that wonder can arise both from considering questions and phenomena that appear new and distant from ordinary experiences, and from looking at things in a new way, seeing ordinary experiences and the things we have every day right under our noses "with fresh eyes”.

This volume offers ideas and examples for create philosophical conversations with very different starting points:

  • Fragments of philosophy
  • Mental experiments
  • Classic fables
  • Illustrated books
  • Proverbs and other areas of discovery
